Spiders are listed in the top 10 things people fear most. And while you may be teased for your arachnophobia, know that there are millions of people out there who also suffer from arachnophobia. Any sign of a spider scuttling across the floor will make any number of people jump in fear.
For many, the fear is real and finding the best way to get rid of or kill spiders is important for their mental well-being.
We've compiled a list of the eight best ways to get rid of spiders naturally:
Remove vegetation from the perimeter of your house. Plants attract spiders as they offer great hiding spots and a place to build their webs. Spiders crawl from the vegetation to your house and get in through any cracks or crevices they find. Anywhere that a spider will find an attractive hiding spot should be removed, even things like stones, leaves, and debris can offer shelter to spiders.
Seal any entry they can use to get into your home. Windows and doors should remain closed when not being used and any cracks or crevices in the walls should be sealed off to keep spiders out.
Keep your house clean. Pick up anything that can offer a hiding spot for spiders and use airtight plastic storage containers to organize your home. Spiders eat other bugs which come into your home to find any crumbs you've dropped. Sweep and vacuum your house regularly to keep spiders away. Also, vacuum up spider webs the moment you notice them.
Get rid of a spider's food supply cutting out the outdoor lights. Spiders like to hang out where there is likely to be a lot of food for them. Doorways with a light are a big food stop for spiders and they can often be found hanging above your head before you get into your home. Keep outdoor lights off or change the bulb to sodium vapor lights or yellow lights. These are not as attractive to bugs and they will be drawn to a brighter light source away from your house.
Spread nuts in the corners of your home. Chestnuts, walnuts, and even a large round fruit from the Osage orange tree are thought to be good spider repellents. It is uncertain why this method is so effective, however some believe that there may be some noxious chemical that repels spiders. This method works best when you cut nuts in half and leave them around the corners of your house.
Put a drop of essential oils in the corners of your house. Some essential oils, such as peppermint oil, tea tree oil, and eucalyptus oil have intense smells that will repel spiders. These critters do not like the smell of many essential oils and will flee in the opposite direction to get away from the scent.
Spread diatomaceous earth around your property. This earth is made from naturally-formed fossils of a water creature known as the diatom. The bugs won’t be stopped in their tracks, however as they travel over this earth, they will be cut up which will make their bodily fluids leak out, causing the spider to eventually dry out and die.
Use vinegar around your home. Vinegar is strong deterrent to get rid of spiders. A mix of equal parts vinegar and water will work to burn spiders due to the acetic acid. Spiders can be repelled by the odor alone, just leave a small dish of vinegar in the corners of your house.
